Job role
Your role:
As a Navy Officer, (known in the Navy as Maritime Warfare Officer), you’ll get the exciting opportunity to gain experience as a Commanding Officer's representative. You’ll get a number of diverse qualifications that equip you with the skills to take charge of a range of Navy vessels while at sea. Navy will help you develop your skills so you can lead a team of people to execute the mission in a unique maritime environment.
This role will develop your leadership skills while giving you an overview of the operation of a ship or submarine. You will have the opportunity to gain the experience required to move up to senior leadership roles. Initial training will qualify you to take responsibility for a minor ship on behalf of the Commanding Officer, eventually moving up to take charge of the Navy’s most prominent fleet units.
Initial training will build your skills to be the Commanding Officer's point person for all decisions regarding the navigation and operations of the ship or submarine. Early in your career you will be leading a team of people to make sure the ship or submarine carries out the requirements of the mission while you are on watch.
Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals, you can really take your career to the next level with a choice to sub-specialise in a range of exciting streams. Sub specialisation areas for surface fleet Maritime Warfare Officers include Navigation, Mine Warfare, Clearance Diving, Meteorology, Oceanography and more.
There are also a wide variety of shore based positions for periods when you are not posted to a ship or submarine, including operational planning, project management, career management and general managerial roles.
Prior experience isn’t needed for this role. You’ll gain all the necessary skills and qualifications to become a Maritime Warfare Officer as part of your training.
